Notes

SOURCE: Harold Lea Fiske states: I have a suspicion the Miranda LEE wh o married John D. WEST was one of the four "unidentified" daughters of Ma lichi LEA. It arises from the language in Deed Book "M" page 391 where , on 3 Sep 1853, "John D. and Maranda WEST and Henry LEA" sold their "und ivided interest" in land "on Roaring River at Mathews Creek near Crockett 's Camp" to Isaac C. COOPER.
I am assuming the "undivided interest" arose through an inheritance. (I h ave put this here because I can't connect this document with any of the W ests, or Coopers, or Matthews, but I know it has something to do with thi s family. Will have to research more. Georgenia Stewart)

!MARRIAGE: Pension records state marriage of Sarah Stewart to James Matt hews, 10 Dec 1802.

NOTES: From Larry Matthews, e-mail n4ptk@infoave.net as of 6 Sept 1999 : I found the following in a small book entitled "Our Cumberland
Kinfolk Our Noble English Ancestry" by Deward Charles Williams, Sr. in th e public library in Cookeville, Putnam County, Tennessee....
"1. LAWRENCE MATTHEWS, the ancestor of our Overton Co.
Tennessee family of Matthews, may be the same man who is listed in the 17 90 Census for the Hillsboro District of Chatham Co. N.C. The
name of his wife is unknown.
Children: (Still quoting now) probably among others.
2. JAMES MATTHEWS, born 1780, son of (1) was b. probably in Chatham Co . N.C. 1780. He married 1802 Sarah, b. 1780, dau. of Samuel and Lydia St ewart. (Sarah is the granddaughter of Samuel and Lydia Stewart. Her pare nts being Joseph Stewart and Sarah Gilbert. By Georgenia Stewart). He wa s living in Overton Co. Tenn. when on
4-5-1810 he received a Tennessee Land Grant, No. 2097 for 200 acres
of land at the headwaters of Roaring River. See Overton Deeds, "B"
pages 259-60." (end of quote)

(now Ten.) He sold his propert y in Surry Co., N.C. on 30 Aug. 1779 prior to moving to Washington Co., N .C. (now Tenn.) She married James Matthews, who died while fighting in t he Creek Wars for which she received a pension.
